Recently, I have met Rachel from udder and hoe, a fantastic new place which has opened up behind the general store in Kilcunda. Rachel and her team have put together a great little space for stocking local fruit and vegies, preserves, pottery, olive oil, whole grains, seeds and pulses, and also Oak and Swan sourdough which arrives on Saturday mornings. The kids and I were lucky enough to visit Rachel at udder and hoe and while we chatted, the kids played on the wide wooden steps among the plants and herbs, and we could see through to the ocean beyond; beautiful. The kids all had a go at the oat roller, since they all love porridge and muesli, they were quite pleased to see how rolled oats get rolled, and what an oat groat looks like before it is milled: brown and slightly longer than a grain of wheat. They are looking forward to porridge from the oats they rolled one morning this week. What a great thing to do with the kids, and end up with lovely fresh organic oats with all their goodness! Next to the oat roller is an absolutely beautiful little wooden grain mill, one of those objects you would just never get tired of looking at, and, it’s useful! Go along sometime and mill yourself some fresh, whole flour from biodynamic grain sold in the store and try making bread from it, or substituting it for normal roller milled flour in your baking. Delicious and good for you, and fun!
